It’s amazing to think that your body is made up of about 70% water. There is a constant loss of water from the body through perspiration and breathing. Even without undertaking any exercise, we lose about 1 pint (600ml) of water per day.. If you live in a particularly hot or tropical climate this will be even more.

Sweating is an important element of the body’s natural detoxification system. Sweat contains toxins that are not required by the body, as well as water. During a detox this process is encouraged so you will probably sweat more than normal. It’s therefore vitally important that you drink a sufficient amount of water during your period of detoxing.

Drinking plenty of water during your detox will also have the effect of diluting any toxins that are in the system. It makes the process of eliminating them through sweating or through the kidneys easier.

It is usually recommended that you drink about 3 and half pints (2 liters) of water per day. This is the equivalent of about 8 glasses. This should be drunk throughout the day. Some experts recommend that the best time to drink it is in between meals rather than together with food.

The best water to take is either bottled mineral water or filtered tap water. Mineral water is now widely available from supermarkets, but you will find that filtered tap water works out to be more cost effective in the long run, and is also more convenient.

Many people that are new to detoxing tend to concentrate on the foods that they can and can’t eat on their diet. This is only part of the story. It is vitally important to your health that you keep up a good intake of water. Even when you have finished your detoxification diet, it’s still a good habit to try and drink 8 glasses of water per day.
